Acne

Do Not Take a Teenagers Acne Outbreak Lightly

Acne is far more serious than just a few pimples. If your son or daughter has acne, and about 85% of teenagers do suffer from it, keep a lookout for their mental health as well as their acne problem.

Acne Can Cause Mental as well as Physical Scarring

The implications of acne on a young adults life can be major with have life long effects on their personal and social development as well as their academic and employment futures. Acne is not just an affliction of the young as adults suffer from outbreaks of it also. Changes in hormone levels such as pregnancy, menopause and some other conditions may predispose adults to an outbreak of acne.

Acne Treatment Should Start with Medical Advice

Moderate to severe acne should be treated by a Doctor or Dermatologist. However there are many over the counter acne treatments available and a great deal of self help is possible by managing ones diet and undertaking proper skin care. Acne is not caused by grubby skin or impure blood and has little to do with most typical diets although excessive fatty food may exacerbate the problem. Rough washing of the skin with stiff brushes or coarse exfoliation products may damage the skin, make acne worse and cause scarring. Likewise squeezing pimples may also lead to scarring and increase inflammation of the skin around the pustule. Acne is not a “fair” affliction and onset of the condition has nothing to do with living standards, wealth, race or sex. It has a genetic basis but even this is not really a true precursor to the onset of acne. Sometimes acne just happens.

The Cause of Acne

Skin The cause of acne starts with the oil glands in the skin becoming overactive and eventually causing pustules on the face, back or the back of the neck. The follicles get blocked which causes blackheads or whiteheads while the sebaceous gland continues to produce oil. The blocked pore means swelling starts until it becomes obvious. Everybody has bacteria on their skin and this is not usually a problem. However acne sufferers may get blocked follicles infected which eventually causes the formation of pus. Pus is largely made up of dead white cells that the body used to fight the infection. The swelling increases until the pustule bursts which may lead to scarring, some of which can be deep and permanent. Treatment of acne often only treats the visible symptoms and medical advice should sought to remedy any underlying health issues such as hormonal imbalances. Skin treatment specialists should be able to help ameliorate the worst of the visible effects of acne but treatment is always slow, often taking some months or even years and the outcome can be variable with the problem likely to reoccur.

Vitamin and Mineral Supplements

Some supplementary vitamins along with selenium and zinc may be beneficial. Skin care that reduces the pH of the skin and regular washing with gentle cleansing lotions my help prevent the pores of the skin from blocking and dissolve existing blockages. Seek medical advice before taking extreme dietary supplements. Suggested supplements are: • Flax seed oil • Small twice daily does of Vitamin A and/or the application of Vitamin A rich ointment. • Small twice daily doses of Vitamin B5 • Small twice daily doses of Vitamin C • Small doses of Vitamin E • Selenium and Zinc may also be necessary.

Acne Treatment        Forehead

Treatment of acne is neither easy nor fast and it needs to focus on reducing the production of natural oils (sebum) and preventing the blocking of pores. A skin specialist can advise on the best ways of doing this but some suggestions are: • Wash twice a day with a mild cleansing lotion / antiseptic face wash • Avoid using makeup that can clog skin pores • Vitamin and Hormone therapies under medical advice can help • Use moisturizers containing lactic acid to keep the skin moist • Sunbaking in not recommended as this can toughen the outer layer of skin and make it more prone to blocked pores • Mild peroxide based lotions should smooth the skin and have antiseptic properties • Avoid harsh skin scrub products as they may increase the production of natural oils and exacerbate scarring • A massage with mineral oil based massage oils my dissolve pore blockages • Tea tree products have antiseptic properties and may help • Blue light therapies may help with mild acne Be prepared to stay the course for a long period of treatment. Successful acne treatment takes time and initial treatment may appear to make the condition worse as the body may initially react by producing more natural skin oils. Once acne is beaten be prepared to resume treatment for any relapses.
